Google Search

Google loves to take chances with its products, and sometimes those products pay off big. Here are the most important products released by Google.

Google Search made its debut in 1997 and remains the most widely used search engine in the world. In fact, Google Search is nearly synonymous with the internet itself at this point. Much of the success of Google Search is due to an algorithm called PageRank that helps to prioritize the value of pages on the web.

Gmail

Gmail is the free email service developed by Google and released in 2004. After drumming up interest with a beta release, Gmail launched publicly and eventually became the most popular email service on the web, passing Hotmail in November 2012.

Chrome Browser

Google Chrome is a free web browser released by Google in 2008. It’s known for its speed and security settings and its integration with Google services. Most of the source code is made open source through Google’s Chromium Project.

Google Fiber

Google Fiber is a fiber optics broadband internet service provided by Google in specific cities in the US. Fiber is important because it represents the next generation of high bandwidth connections for consumers and small businesses. It’s also a key step for Google in diversifying its product offerings.

Google Maps

One year after the beta release of Gmail, Google released the web-based mapping service Google Maps. The services offers maps and directions, offering routes for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and mass transit riders. It’s the most popular mapping app for both web and mobile users.

Google Docs

Google Docs is a cloud-based, collaborative word processing app available to Google account holders. Google originally developed Google Docs based on a product called Writely from company called Upstartle, which Google acquired in 2006.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a service offered by Google that tracks and measures the traffic on a user’s website. Especially popular with small businesses, Analytics is one of the most used services of its kind.

Google AdWords

AdWords is Google’s online advertising service that places text-based advertisements at key locations on a page for a particular search term. Powered largely by AdWords, Google made more than $50 billion on advertising in 2013.

Google Drive

Google Drive is the cloud-based file-sharing service developed by Google that allows synchronization of products like Google Docs across different devices and platforms. Google Drive was released in early 2012, after being rumored for years.

Chromebooks

Chromebooks are personal computers developed by Google that run the Chrome OS. Chromebooks were developed to work almost exclusively with web-based applications, and they represent one of Google’s successful forays into hardware, especially in the education space.
